Visibility and Travel Delays
The thick smog has caused over 150 flight delays, with dozens of trains running behind schedule. Visibility in Delhi and neighboring areas plummeted to zero during the early hours of Friday, forcing authorities to issue travel advisories.
The Delhi airport warned passengers of disruptions and stated that only CAT III-compliant flights could land in such poor visibility. Flight tracking websites reported delays of over 30 minutes for departures and 20 minutes for arrivals.
Impact on Public Transport
The Indian Railways confirmed delays in 26 trains due to the fog. Passengers traveling by road faced challenges as the smog blanketed highways, reducing visibility and increasing risks for commuters.
Social media platforms were flooded with complaints from passengers facing confusion at the airport and train stations.
Pollution Levels and Health Concerns
Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) surged beyond 400 in several areas, over 25 times the safe limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO). This alarming level of pollution, caused by low winter temperatures trapping pollutants, makes the air hazardous to breathe.
Authorities have reintroduced pollution control measures, including a ban on construction and demolition activities and shifting school classes online to safeguard children.
Measures and Forecast
Authorities hope for temporary relief as the Indian Meteorological Department predicts light showers over the weekend, which are expected to improve visibility conditions. However, the recurring nature of this problem highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions to Delhi’s pollution crisis.
