PinkNews Founders Respond to Sexual Misconduct Allegations
Benjamin Cohen and Anthony James, the couple behind PinkNews, have denied allegations of sexual misconduct and a toxic workplace culture following a BBC investigation. The pair described the claims as “false, inconsistent, and malicious” in an open letter published on the PinkNews website.
The allegations surfaced in a BBC documentary, which interviewed 30 former and current employees who described a workplace culture involving heavy drinking and inappropriate behaviour. Five former employees alleged witnessing Dr James engaging in unwanted physical contact with a younger, intoxicated colleague.
Police Investigation and PinkNews Statement
Mr Cohen and Dr James stated they initially refrained from commenting due to an ongoing criminal investigation. According to the couple’s statement:
“In August, we made a criminal complaint to the police in relation to alleged offences committed against us connected with these recent reports. Devices had been seized, with forensic investigations ongoing.”
They accused the BBC of knowingly misleading the public by airing the documentary despite awareness of the police inquiry.
“The BBC broadcast has caused extremely serious harm to us, to PinkNews, and to our colleagues,” the couple said.
Claims of a Toxic Work Environment
The BBC report also alleged a toxic culture at PinkNews, with employees fearing to speak out due to Mr Cohen and Dr James being both the most senior figures and married to each other.
In response, the couple emphasized their legal consultations regarding the allegations and reiterated their denial.
Further Allegations and NHS Suspension
Since the BBC’s initial report, over 10 additional former staff members have come forward with allegations about their time at PinkNews.
Following the documentary, Dr James has been suspended from his role as an associate non-executive director within the NHS, though this suspension is unrelated to his work within the healthcare sector. The BBC has contacted Dr James’ representatives for comment regarding the suspension.
PinkNews and Its Reach
