K-Pop Group NewJeans Split from Agency in Mistreatment Row
Chart-topping K-pop group NewJeans has announced their departure from Ador, a subsidiary of Hybe, citing mistreatment and manipulation. The five-member girl band held a late-night press conference to reveal their decision, which has sent shockwaves through the K-pop industry.
Hanni, one of the group’s members, accused the company of neglecting their welfare. “This is not the type of work ethic we respect and not one we want to be a part of,” she said. Hanni claimed the group faced deliberate miscommunication and mistreatment, adding that the behavior extended to their staff.
Accusations of Mistreatment and Manipulation
NewJeans’ departure follows a year-long controversy involving Ador and Hybe. Former producer Min Hee-Jin, who left Ador in August, has also been at the center of the dispute. The group expressed a desire to work with Min, who they credit as the mastermind behind their success.
NewJeans filed a legal notice on November 13, demanding that Ador resolve breaches of their contracts. Their requests included an apology from a manager accused of bullying and the reinstatement of Min. However, Ador denied any contractual violations and called for open discussions with the group.
Legal and Financial Implications
The split raises significant legal and financial challenges. NewJeans’ contracts, originally set to run until 2029, included a hefty termination fee of 300 billion South Korean Won (approximately £170 million). Despite this, member Haerin argued that the group should not be held liable, stating, “We never broke any rules. Hybe and Ador are the ones responsible.”
Ador, however, maintains that the group’s claims are unfounded. “We respectfully request that the group continue its collaboration with Ador on upcoming activities,” the agency stated.
NewJeans’ Impact on the K-Pop Industry
NewJeans debuted in 2022 and quickly became one of K-pop’s biggest acts, with hits like Super Shy and OMG. They were the eighth best-selling artists globally last year and earned a nomination for Best Group at the MTV Awards.
The group’s decision to leave Ador could set a precedent for how entertainment agencies handle their artists. Fans and industry insiders are closely watching as the situation unfolds.
