Maori Haka in NZ Parliament Protests Bill on Treaty Interpretation
New Zealand’s parliament was momentarily halted as Maori MPs performed a haka in protest of a bill that seeks to reinterpret the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding treaty with the Maori people. Opposition MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke led the haka, a powerful Maori dance, expressing dissent against legislation that critics argue could undermine Maori rights.
Rising Tensions Over Treaty Principles
The bill, introduced by the Act party, aims to legally define the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, which has shaped race relations in New Zealand since it was signed in 1840. Act claims that current interpretations divide the nation along racial lines and need clarification in Parliament rather than by courts. Act leader David Seymour argues that the bill ensures fair treatment for all New Zealanders, while opponents fear it may dismantle Maori protections embedded in the treaty’s principles.
Growing Opposition and Nationwide Hīkoi March
The parliamentary haka coincides with a hīkoi, or peaceful protest march, led by Maori rights advocates that has gathered thousands of supporters on a 1,000-kilometer journey to Wellington. Many protestors, like Danielle Moreau and Winston Pond, say they march to defend the treaty’s significance in New Zealand’s identity. By crossing Auckland’s Harbour Bridge, protestors conveyed their dedication to preserving Maori rights in the face of legislation they see as divisive.
Broad Backlash from Maori Leaders
The Waitangi Tribunal, established to investigate breaches of the treaty, denounced the bill for its lack of Maori consultation and alleged misinterpretation of treaty principles. Additional moves, like closing the Maori Health Authority, have further fueled concerns among Maori leaders, who say Maori are already disadvantaged in health, income, and life expectancy compared to the general population.
As the Treaty Principles Bill proceeds to a select committee, New Zealand’s ongoing debate over the treaty highlights the tensions and responsibilities in ensuring Maori rights remain protected within the nation’s laws.
