Prosecutor Horst Walter Nopens suggested a potential motive might be disgruntlement over the treatment of Saudi refugees in Germany. Despite this, authorities found no links to Islamist extremism.
A Saudi government source claimed to have issued warnings about the suspect’s “extreme views,” but these allegations are contested, with some experts suggesting a disinformation campaign may be at play.

The incident prompted widespread mourning, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attending a memorial service at Magdeburg Cathedral on Saturday. Scholz described the attack as a “dreadful tragedy,” committing all resources to the investigation.
