Father of Teen Dies in Laos from Methanol Poisoning
The tragic death of 19-year-old Holly Bowles in Laos has left her father, Shaun Bowles, in disbelief. Holly, described as “full of life,” died of suspected methanol poisoning alongside her best friend, Bianca Jones. The Australian teens were celebrating their graduation with a backpacking trip across Southeast Asia when they unknowingly consumed alcohol contaminated with methanol, a toxic chemical found in some bootleg drinks.
This incident, which occurred in the tourist town of Vang Vieng, has claimed six lives so far, including four other foreign nationals.
Tragedy Strikes in Laos
Shaun described receiving the devastating news while Holly and Bianca were being treated in a Thai hospital. The teenagers were found unresponsive in their hostel after consuming contaminated alcohol. Despite efforts to save them, Bianca died on 21 November, followed by Holly the next day.
“She was everything you could want in a daughter—kind, confident, and full of life,” Shaun said.
Justice and Accountability
Authorities in Laos have arrested eight individuals in connection with the incident. Shaun and Bianca’s father, Mark, are now advocating for stricter regulations and accountability for those responsible for the contaminated alcohol.
“We want justice for Holly and Bianca, and we’re committed to raising awareness to prevent this from happening to others,” Shaun emphasized.
Raising Awareness for Travelers
Methanol poisoning is a hidden danger in regions with unregulated alcohol production. Travelers are advised to avoid unsealed drinks and consume only from reputable brands.
Shaun has also urged governments to take action to protect young travelers exploring Southeast Asia.
