Zelda’s Makers Reflect on Princess Zelda’s First Big Adventure
After decades as a supporting character, Princess Zelda finally takes center stage in Nintendo’s latest release, Echoes of Wisdom. Known for her presence in the Legend of Zelda series, Zelda has always been overshadowed by Link, the series’ usual hero. But this new adventure showcases her as the main character, introducing innovative gameplay that has captivated fans and critics alike.
A New Direction for the Zelda Series
When Echoes of Wisdom was announced in June, fans were excited to see Zelda as the main protagonist. Unlike Link’s typical sword-and-shield combat, Zelda’s abilities revolve around “echoes”—items and enemies that can be copied and “pasted” into the world to solve puzzles. Players have discovered unique ways to use these echoes, stacking objects to reach high places or summoning multiple enemies to help in combat.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma and directors Tomomi Sano and Satoshi Terada shared their excitement and apprehension about this new direction. Aonuma admitted his main concern was ensuring players understood the echoes’ potential and the unique challenges Zelda’s gameplay style presents.
Fans’ Creative Use of the Echo System
Since its release, fans have embraced Zelda’s new gameplay style, sharing creative solutions and gameplay videos online. Echoes of Wisdom offers a level of freedom that mirrors last year’s Tears of the Kingdom, where players could build intricate contraptions. The development team was surprised by some player innovations, like using a bed and a tornado to launch Zelda into the air—an interaction they hadn’t foreseen.
Sano and Terada admitted they were thrilled by fans’ creativity, with Sano amazed at techniques she hadn’t thought possible. This creative experimentation is something they hoped to encourage, adding layers to the adventure.
Addressing Criticisms
Despite widespread praise, Echoes of Wisdom faced some criticisms, particularly regarding performance on the aging Nintendo Switch. Players reported frame rate issues, which can impact the smoothness of gameplay. Sano explained that they used a variable frame rate to balance performance, a choice the team deemed necessary to ensure the best experience possible on the current hardware.
The game’s menu system, used to manage collected echoes, was another point of critique. As players gather up to 127 echoes by the end of the game, navigating through a long horizontal list of icons can be cumbersome. Terada noted that the developers wanted players to explore the echoes freely, but they also provided a notebook feature for quicker access.
A Return to Zelda’s Roots
With Zelda’s 40th anniversary approaching in 2026, Aonuma sees Echoes of Wisdom as both a celebration and evolution of the series. While the game brings new elements to the top-down gameplay style of classic Zelda titles, Aonuma believes it also preserves the essence that fans love. Reflecting on future possibilities, he hinted that Nintendo might continue exploring both 2D and 3D Zelda adventures, much to fans’ delight.
With Echoes of Wisdom, Nintendo has crafted a unique adventure that redefines Princess Zelda’s role and offers a fresh experience for long-time fans. As the series evolves, Zelda’s newfound spotlight hints at even more surprises in her storied legacy.
