SZA Reflects on ‘Scary’ Glastonbury Headline Performance
US singer-songwriter SZA has spoken candidly about her experience as a headliner at this year’s Glastonbury festival, calling it “scary” and “freaking out” during the performance. Despite technical issues and a smaller crowd compared to other headliners, the 35-year-old’s theatrical set earned rave reviews from critics.
A Historic Moment
SZA was only the second Black woman to headline Glastonbury after Beyoncé in 2011. She acknowledged the immense pressure of the role, telling British Vogue, “No matter what you do here, you will be subject to criticism because of who you are.”
The singer also revealed that the challenges of performing on the iconic Pyramid Stage, including muffled audio issues and low audience turnout, left her feeling like she was “drowning on stage.”
Praise for a Unique Performance
Despite the hurdles, SZA’s elaborate set design — featuring a mossy grotto, a giant mechanical beetle, and fairy wings — received glowing reviews. The Guardian described it as “peculiar but hugely rewarding,” while the Independent called it a “melancholy, intimate” spectacle.
The BBC noted her “spectacular vocal command” but suggested the Pyramid Stage wasn’t the best venue for her.
Finding Strength in Spirituality
During the performance, SZA found solace in what she described as a sign from the African goddess Yemayá. “It was a reminder that your guardians are with you. Keep going,” she said.
A New Chapter in Music
SZA, whose real name is Solána Imani Rowe, also discussed her upcoming album, Lana, in the interview. Unlike the emotional weight of her earlier records, she said this new project emerges from a “more beautiful place.”
“Piece by piece, my music is shifting because of that, the lighter I get,” she explained.
Grappling with Fame
Despite her success as one of the world’s most-streamed artists, SZA admitted she struggles with fame and anxiety. “Maybe I’m just not meant to be famous… but why would God put me in this position if I wasn’t supposed to be doing this?”
